This week the New York Times recognized Wall-of-Us for “calling on the Ladies Professional Golf Association to demand that United States Golf Association move the U.S. Women’s Open tournament scheduled for July…” Good work! But we’re only getting started.
Golf is a key part of Trump’s assets, and even Republican ethics experts have concluded that it is a conflict of interest for Trump to use the presidency to promote his resorts. We need to make sure his swampy strategy bogeys! That’s why Wall-of-Us is teaming up with two groups, Golfers Opposing Bigotry and Alt USGA. Golfers Opposing Bigotry was founded by Jeffrey Sammons, an NYU history professor, Calvin Sinnette, a historian of black golfers, and Cedrick Smith, a two-time National Minority Collegiate Golf Association All-American.
These groups get it--just like #grabyourwallet, we need to follow the money. As Professor Sammons has explained, “If nothing else has moved the PGA and USGA to sever ties to Trump, perhaps their corporate partners, patrons, and sponsors can but only if the public demands it.”
All-of-us will demand it because it works. Hundreds of companies have spoken up against the Trump Administration and our voices give them the courage to stand up to bigotry.
The sponsors for the USGA are American Express, Deloitte, Lexus and Rolex. Each of these companies have meaningfully committed to “doing well by doing good” through their corporate responsibility programs. By sponsoring the USGA which refuses to boycott Trump they are, however, fueling both misogyny and corruption. Deloitte’s CEO Punit Renjen recently wrote (in an incredible letter to his “six year old self”), “Hold tight to your values and speak up for the things you believe in.” We agree with Mr. Renjen, so let’s spend fifteen minutes this week to let these sponsors know where we stand.
