Week 11/27 Action 3: Reject Jeff Sessions, Call the Senate Judiciary Committee

Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions was the first Senator to endorse Trump. Trump is returning the favor by picking him as our country’s Attorney General. Sessions’ positions are anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-L.G.B.T., and anti-abortion. As if that weren’t enough, Sessions also has a history of racism.

Senator Elizabeth Warren said it best, “Thirty years ago, a different Republican Senate rejected Senator Sessions’ nomination to a federal judgeship. In doing so, that Senate affirmed that there can be no compromise with racism; no negotiation with hate. Today, a new Republican Senate must decide whether self-interest and political cowardice will prevent them from once again doing what is right.”

Sessions’ nomination has to be approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. That committee can either reject the nomination or move the nomination to the Senate for a (simple majority) vote. America must continue to move forward--a man who the Republicans felt was too racist to be a judge 30 years ago would only propel us backward.

All-of-us must:
1. Call the members of the Judiciary committee. Here is a handy list of D.C. and local office numbers for all members.

Here is a sample script:  "Hello, I am calling to let [Senator ___] know that I am against the nomination of Senator Sessions as our Attorney General. The ACLU and other civil rights organizations have stood against his positions on civil rights, LGBT rights, abortion rights, and presidential authority in times of war. He also has a long history of racist speech. I ask that [Senator ___] flatly reject Senator Sessions’ nomination. If [Senator ___] is not willing to do so, then Senator Sessions’ confirmation process should include a thorough  review of his voting record and statements.”

These three Republicans have spoken out against Trump in the past, but Senators Graham and Lee recently issued statements in support of Sessions.
Senator Jeff Flake (R — AZ): (202) 224–4521; local: (602) 840-1891
Senator Lindsey Graham (R — SC): (202) 224–5972; local: (864) 250-1417
Senator Michael S. Lee (R — UT): (202) 224–5444; local: (801) 392-9633

Then call the other Republicans, and the Democrats.
